A sleep study is easier than most patients expect — no needles, nothing invasive. Here is how to prepare, what the sensors measure, and what happens after your night in the lab or at home.
Home study or in-lab study?
Many patients qualify for a home sleep test: a small kit you wear for one night in your own bed. In-lab studies add brain-wave, leg-movement, and oxygen monitoring for more complex cases. Your provider will recommend the right option based on your symptoms.
The night of the study
Keep your normal routine, but skip caffeine after lunch and avoid napping. A technologist (or the instructions in your home kit) will place small sensors on your scalp, chest, and finger. They record breathing, heart rate, and oxygen — none of it hurts, and most people sleep better than they expect.
Getting your results
A sleep physician scores the study and reviews it with you, usually within one to two weeks. If the study shows sleep apnea, we will walk through treatment options — from CPAP therapy to positional and dental approaches — and build a plan around your life.
